Brenton L. Blais, 37, of Old Orchard Beach was indicted in early January on charges of manslaughter and operating under the influence for the death of his passenger when he crashed his motorcycle last summer in Westbrook.
On the evening of Saturday, July 25, 2015, at about 8:30 p.m., Blais crashed his motorcycle near 290 Pride Street, according to the Westbrook Police Department. According to police statements to The Forecaster, Blais allegedly lost control of his motorcycle and hit mailboxes and a driveway culvert. The impact threw him and his passenger, Jennifer Lavigne, 35, from the bike.
The victims were transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where Lavigne was pronounced dead. Neither rider was wearing a helmet and police said that speed and alcohol contributed to the crash. Blais underwent unspecified surgery.
The Cumberland County grand jury returned indictments for manslaughter and operating under the influence of alcohol resulting in death. The former is a Class A felony with a prison sentence of up to 30 years; the latter is a Class B felony with a prison sentence of up to 20 years.
